Kristen is an alumnus of Clayton High School. While high school she participated in the marching band, winter-guard, and wind ensemble. After graduation, she decided to pursue a degree in music education. Kristen is currently a junior at East Carolina University, studying under flute professor, Dr. Christine Gustafson. At ECU, she has been a part of the flute choir, Concert, Symphonic, and Marching
Band. The summer after her sophomore year, she became Treasurer for ECU chapter of CNAFME.
Kristen was recently elected to the Secretary position for the North Carolina collegiate chapter of NAFME.
In recent years, she has worked with multiple band programs including South Johnston, North Johnston,
Clayton High School, and Eppes Middle School. Her passion and drive to teach grow stronger each year,
and she looks forward to her future in music education.
Alan Martin is the Director of Bands at Springfield Middle School in Lucama, NC. He holds a Bachelor's of Music Education from the East Carolina University. Mr. Martin Graduated from Dorman High School in 1993 with the passion for music that has lead him through his teaching career thus far. He also has been a band director at SouthWest Edgecombe High School from 2004-2010, and one year as Assistant Band Director at Clayton High School from 2010-2011.
Alan is a active performer outside of his private teaching and public teaching commitments. Mr. Martin plays saxophone, guitar, and sings with the band Back Yard Groove from Pinetops, NC. His passion for Jazz is one of the main reasons he still plays his saxophone today.
Brita graduated from Clayton High School in 2008 after being active in the color guard program all four years. She created the first Clayton JV winter guard during her senior year; at that time, she knew teaching color guard was her passion. Between her sophomore and junior year of high school, she marched in the Capital Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps (2008). Brita was a part of First Flight World Winterguard in 2010, 2011, and 2012, finishing in WGI World Finals all three years.
Brita worked with North Johnston High School color guard in 2008 and Franklinton High School color guard in 2010 and 2011. In 2011, she started the first winter guard at Franklinton high school. In 2014, Brita got the opportunity, as First Flight alumni, to tech First Flight A winter guard during their 2014 season. In addition to teaching color guard, Brita is also a senior at East Carolina University studying toward a Bachelor in Middle Grades Education with concentrations in science and language arts. During her time at ECU, she was inducted into the Kappa Delta Pi School of Education Honor Society and Golden Key international Honor Society.
Brita is entering her 7th year on staff with Clayton Guard and her 11th consecutive year with Clayton
Jerry has been active as an adjudicator, performer, composer, arranger, and instructor in the Music Business for over 33 years.
Jerry earned his Bachelor of Education Degree in Percussion from Tennessee Technological University, and attended the University of Iowa as a graduate teaching assistant in the Band Department.
He performed as a percussionist with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra for 10 years. He also performed with the Knoxville Opera, Ballet and the Oak Ridge Symphony. Jerry is active as a jazz pianist and even performed at Carnegie Hall, the New Orleans Jazz Festival and West Point Academy! Jerry has appeared on national TV with Louie Bellson on ABC's Good Morning, America Show with Charles Kuralt.
As an arranger/instructor, Jerry has worked with many drum corps and marching bands across the US and Europe, including: Boston Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps, Colts Drum and Bugle Corps, Clayton HS (2013 WGI Concert Open Class World Champions), Tarpon Springs HS, Seminole HS, Penn HS, and many others.

Jonathan graduated from Clayton High School in 2011 after being active in marching band, winter percussion, wind ensemble, and jazz band during his four years. He taught with Corinth Holders HS band camp before attending the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. During his freshman year in college, Jonathan worked as a percussion tech at a Greensboro high school, and in 2012 he taught at CHS band camp and assisted with the marching band program on Saturdays. Jonathan moved back to Clayton in the summer of 2014, when he became a percussion instructor at Corinth Holders HS, taking Corinth Holders percussion ensemble to their first WGI World Championship in 2015, where they placed 3rd.
Jonathan began working full-time as the Percussion Instructor at Clayton High School in November 2015. With his heart in the Clayton band room, and his head indulged in music, Jonathan is thrilled to be back home with his Comets.
Jonathan currently resides in Clayton, where he shares a house with some friends, including his high school drumline colleague. He is currently working toward completing his music production degree.
Clayton High School Performance Ensembles
Kayla is a recent graduate from Cleveland High School here in Johnston County. While in high school, she was very active in the Colorguard program, and was vital in the development of the Cleveland Middle
School Winterguard. After high school, she continued spinning and was a participant in the Carolina Gold Drum and Bugle Corp as well as First Flight A winterguard in 2013-2014. Kayla is current a member of Legacy: Presented by Carolina Gold. She has been a featured weapon in the ensemble the past two seasons. Kayla is currently enrolled in college and working toward her career goals, and is entering her first colorguard teaching job with Clayton High School.
