The Clayton High School Bands Color Guard has two performance seasons. In the fall, the Color Guard performs with the Clayton High School Marching Band. The Color Guard plays a significant role in the band's competition marching show, often serving to illustrate and act out the story told by the music.

During the spring semester, the group becomes the Clayton High School Winter Guard. The performance season runs from January through April, and consists of indoor competitions which include schools from across the state of North Carolina.

Costumes are custom-designed each season and complement the music of the marching season show or indoor competition show. The Color Guard performances integrate flags, rifles, sabres, and other props into professionally choreographed routines incorporating dance and gymnastics movements. Auditions for the Clayton High School Color Guard for Marching Band and Winter Guard seasons are open to Clayton High School students in 9th-12th grades, and for current 8th grade middle school students currently districted to Clayton High School. Auditions for Marching Band Color Guard take place in the month of May, and Winter Guard auditions in the months of November & December.
